Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Decompose numbers within 100 and Solve word problems using the taking from ten strategy.

Taking from Ten within 100 Practice

We know how to break numbers apart by tens and ones:

Try breaking apart bigger numbers by making a 10

We can use the Take from 10 strategy to solve subtraction problems

Let’s see:

Try it out!

Ben had 36 pencils, then he gave 4 to his sister. How many does Ben have left?

Activity #1

Directions: Fill in the missing numbers according to the pattern

Directions: Place the following numbers on the number line:

63     23     71     45     88

Directions: Make a number bond for each number with a 10

Activity #2

Directions: Build your number with base ten blocks. Then hide some! Your partner needs to figure out how many you hid. Then write an equation to represent your problem.

______________ - ________________ = ______________

Taking from Ten within 100 Game

a. Materials Needed: Paper, pencil, 2 dice per group

b. Students will play this game in partners. Each person starts with 100 points. One student rolls the two dice, and builds a two-digit number from the dice. For instance, if a student rolled a 3 and 6, they could create 36 or 63.

c. The student then subtracts their two-digit number from 100. Students keep taking turns until one person reaches 0.

d. Whoever reaches 0 first, wins the game!
