a. Students can complete the activity with a partner or independently. Pass out counting chips to groups. They use the counting chips to model the equations on the activity board.

 

b. Circulate as students work and help as necessary. Remind students to break numbers apart to make a friendly number, 10.

Making Ten to Add within 20 Game

a. Materials Needed: Reproducible game board, laminated for future use, and one die.

 

b. Students will play this game in partners. One student rolls the die and moves forward that many spaces. They land on a space and read the number. They say how many more to 10. If they are correct, they can stay on their spot. If they are incorrect, they move back one space. Whoever reaches the finish line first, wins the game.
